But, with ChatGPT taking up so much mind share lately, I have an observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During my career, I\u2019ve seen several technologies or approaches that would allow <em>non-programmers<\/em> to write systems, and replace those expensive programmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The claims that I can think of right off<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Fourth generation languages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWriting programs in plain English\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><acronym title=\"\u201dComputer\">CASE<\/acronym> tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expert Systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visual\/Block programming<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even Visual Basic was touted as a way for anyone to program. (There are definitely others that I don\u2019t remember.) Most of these have either become niche, a very focused tool, or have fallen by the wayside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the main reason I remain skeptical of ChatGPT (or Co-pilot, or <em>insert LLM tool here<\/em>) for now. I expect they will eventually turn into some kind of specialized tool that are used in certain circumstances, but will not radically change the way software is developed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This deserves a much bigger write-up.
